In June of 2018, The Liberty Block reported that Domino's Pizza had grown tired of waiting for politicians to fix our roads. The pizza company began to repave roads and fix potholes in 4 cities, boasting fantastic efficiency. Compare this to city governments which spend roughly a billion per year on road maintenance with no improvement to show for it.
After receiving ‘an overwhelming amount of nominations’, Domino's announced on January 21st of 2019 that they will be filling potholes and repairing roads in Berlin, NH. It is not yet certain when the project will begin (snow still covers the roads) but we do know for certain that this lucky town in Northern New Hampshire will be receiving some excellent, efficient road repairs, all without a single individual being coerced by threat of force to give up their hard earned money.
By the numbers
Domino’s is paving and repairing roads with efficiency that is unheard of in the age of government-controlled roadwork. The Domino’s contractors repaired 10 roads and 40 potholes with only 4 workers in 10 hours, according to their site.
In order to understand why government is horribly inefficient and neglectful in their spending, we must understand whose money the government spends; taxpayers. Private businesses, on the other hand, spend their own money. Therefore, they have a direct incentive to spend their money wisely and efficiently. In this instance, Domino’s wanted their pizza to arrive at their customers’ homes intact. American roads have become so horrible that their pizzas were arriving discombobulated from all of the bumps that the vehicles endure while bringing the pizza to its destination.
Additionally, Domino’s Pizza stamps their work with their company name and logo using white paint. Obviously, this is worth more in advertising and good PR than they even spend on the road repair project.
Now that a few cities have flatter and smoother roads, more people will enjoy pizza properly. More importantly, roads are being fixed in cities without people being forced by the threat of law to give their own money to politicians who pay union workers to work inefficiently because they have no motivation to do otherwise.. Papa John’s Pizza claims to have ‘better ingredients’. One could argue that Domino’s Pizza has a damn good recipe - a recipe for sustained freedom and government accountability.
So, we have the answer to the question often posed to ‘anarchists’: Without government, who would maintain the roads?
Capitalism and the free market will, because it’s in the interest of businesses to do so!
